Does God know your name? He counts the stars and calls them by name.(Ps.147:4) If God gives the stars names then He must know our name. We do not need a name tag to be identified by God, for He already knows who we are. Jesus used the parable or illustration that His sheep knows the Shepherd’s voice and He calls His sheep by name. (John 10:3)
Answer God When He Speaks
There are many examples we read about in the Bible. One of the first is when Samuel the prophet hears the Lord call his name when he was just a child, and he thinks it’s the Priest Eli. But Eli tells him it is the Lord and how to answer Him. The Lord calls, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak for your servant hears.” The Lord gave him a message. (I Samuel 3) I think the Lord wants to know we are listening before he gives us a message.
Do Not Fear or Doubt
When the Priest Zacharias (John The Baptist’s father) saw the angel of the Lord; fear fell on him. The angel then said, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias,” The angel gave His message then told Zacharias because he didn’t believe His words he would be mute until the things He told him came to past. Do you realize that just because you don’t believe what God says that your doubt will not keep it from coming to past? When God speaks a thing it shall come to past. (Luke 1:5-13)
Now when the angel appeared to Mary, she was troubled at his saying. The angel told her “Do not be afraid Mary, for you have found favor with God.” He knew her name. Mary did not doubt what the angel told her, even though she did not understand. She just said, “let it be to me according to your word.” When God calls your name, just believe the word he speaks. (Luke 1:38)
God Wants a Personal Relationship
God knows all of our names, after all He’s God. The question is, “Do I know God’s name?” From the beginning God wanted a relationship with mankind. He even gave the first man his name, Adam. He walked in the evening with Adam. God called to him personally, by calling out his name. And Adam knew it was the voice of God calling him, because he also knew God personally.
Sometimes when I’m praying, I start out talking to God by saying, “Jesus, this is Eva,” because what I am going to say is so personal to me, that I want God to know it’s coming directly from my heart.
One such time was when I got a call saying my brother was on his way to the hospital and they were sure he’d had a stroke. When you have someone that means a lot to you in need, your prayers become even more earnest and your words become more personal and less religious. Before I prayed, I reminded myself of this core truth that I and my family live by: I believe if you have a right relationship with God, He will prepare you for what you’re going to face. (Amos 3:7) So I prayed, “Jesus, this is Eva, and you haven’t told me anything about my brother so I believe you are taking care of this.”
In conclusion; in John 10:27 Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow me. God knows us so well. Here is a link to a beautiful song sung by the McRaes, that speaks of how precious our names are to Him.
